MORE THAN 60,000 CARDS COLLECTED IN 2002-2003

In a project that seeks to reduce waste and help those in need, Healthy Communities of Henry County spearheaded a collection of cards for the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. The Ranch has three locations used as homes for children removed from abusive situations. The children take the cards and create new greetings cards for sale through their gift shop. Please visit their site to purchase cards or learn more about supporting their efforts.

The support from Henry County was incredible! Many businesses offered to be collection sites, including

  • Cross-Eyed Cat
  • Forest Ridge Pharmacy
  • HealthRidge
  • Henry County Memorial Hospital
  • Hallmark (who also donated wrap for the collection boxes)
  • Henry County YMCA
  • Mancino’s Pizza
  • New Castle Henry County Library
  • Star Bank

Nine of the elementary schools of Henry County competed to see which classroom could bring in the most cards in a five-day period. The winner was the preschool class of Agape Learning Center; thanks to the efforts of Chaylynn Turney who brought in over 5,000 cards! The top school was Sunnyside Elementary with over 10,000 cards. Thanks to Mancino’s for providing a pizza party to the winning class.

Many thanks to Three Rivers Recycling for helping with the cost of shipping the cards.

The combined efforts of the school children and local businesses kept more than 60,000 cards out of the landfills – and will keep the children at St. Jude’s Ranch busy for quite awhile.

The pictures below show some of the cards that were collected. 52 boxes were needed to get all the cards ready for shipping to St. Jude’s!
