FUN Playground: It has been nearly 9 years since we built the FUN playground in 1998, and it brings as much joy to the kids of our community as it did the day it was built. One important responsibility is maintaining the playground. Also, we had great help this summer from 5 of the RSVP volunteers checking on the playground every week, raking mulch, weeding, and picking up litter. For more information on how you can help, contact funpark@hchcin.org or download and mail in a sponsorship form to have your name added to the playground!

Raintree Trails: We are looking at extending biking/walking trails from the YMCA out to the edges of Henry County. Our top priority is to connect to the Cardinal Greenway which grazes the Northeast corner of Henry County on its course from Muncie to Losantville. Help support the Raintree Trails by joining in the 7th Annual Stride and Ride!

Ride Your Bike to Work: Ride Your Bike to Work Day is a national event scheduled for Friday, May 18, 2007.  We encourage you to join us in promoting this special event.

River Clean-Up: Clean water is a human “right” according to the World Health Organization, so we’re doing our part to help. We work with the Friends of the Big Blue River (FOTBBR), who remove trash from Henry County’s waterways and monitor the water quality. Several community river clean-ups are planned this year for the Knightstown, Indiana, area (we did New Castle last year). Email fotbbr@hchcin.org for more information or check the Calendar for dates and times as they are announced.

Skatepark: The New Castle Skatepark project is finished! The City of New Castle, with assistance from Healthy Communities, has created a skatepark on the unused tennis courts at Osborn Park. Take a moment to stop and see how creative these skateboarders & bicyclists are! Many thanks to all the community members whose generosity and understanding helped make this skatepark a reality for our youth.

Tree Planting: Spring has arrived, and this is the best time to plant new trees. Each year, Healthy Communities board members and volunteers work with classes from local elementary schools to plant trees in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day.  Over 1000 new trees were added to Henry County in 2006!  This year, Earth Day is Sunday, April 22, 2007.

Outreach: Many organizations in Henry County have projects that involve volunteers of Healthy Communities. Occasionally, a volunteer will ask other Healthy Communities volunteers to help on a particular project. This year, volunteers will be involved with Health Fair (June 9, 2007), Community Matters, Day of Caring (September 11, 2007), Business Expo and International Walk to School Day.

More projects are being added! Attend an upcoming meeting to find out what you can do to help...
