It was perfect weather for the runners in Lewisville Saturday morning: cool, overcast, and not too bad for the spectators either; the rain held off and a little sun poked through from time to time. We officially opened of the first three miles of the National Road Heritage Trail in Henry County with a ribbon cutting ceremony, and the race got underway a little after 9:00 with a field of 18 runners and 16 walkers.

Mark Brock led the pack from the beginning. He couldn't quite keep up the 18½-minute pace of his first mile, but he still won the men's division handily with a respectable 19:33. Kelsy West won the woman's division with 26:38. April Rosenberger and Jenifer Southerland turned in identical times of 30:19, though April will go in the record books as women's 2nd. Allison Stroud won the 30-39 division with a 33:46 and Nancy McCullers took the 50-59 division with a 43:29.

Chet Paskiewitz held a comfortable men's second with 21:23, but it was a horse race the whole way for men's third. In the end Terrell Lee (22:24) beat out Pat Mummert (22:25) in a photo finish. Pat had to settle for placing first in the 30-39 age division. Ed Benedict won the 40-49 division (5th overall) with a 23:30. By placing 2nd and 3rd overall, Chet and Terrell took some of the pressure off the rest of us in the crowded men's 50-59 division, allowing Mike McIntosh to place "first" with 27:21. Perhaps Oakland Demoss deserves top honors. He won the 60+ division with a 37:19, a time in minutes less than half his age. Our men's and women's overall winners couldn't top that!

The walking event was non-competitive (not that all us runners were exactly "competitive"). Finishing times ranged from Gwen Mathis's impressive 48:27 (about 15:38/mile, a good jog for most people) to a much more leisurely hour and twenty minutes. In addition to the sixteen official entries, many race volunteers and other spectators were seen walking parts of the trail. We thank all of them for coming out and helping us celebrate!
